10 Daily Steps to an Organized Home

  1. Interesting article but as far as I'm concerned, way off base in several ways. First of all, it's not energy efficient or cost efficient to run a clothes dryer every day, or to run a washer every day. It's better to spend a morning or afternoon doing all the laundry; less wear and tear on the appliances, cheaper because the dryer stays warm and doesn't have to re-heat completely, and so forth.

The other ones that had me blinking was the idea of incorporating running errands into each day, again for the same reasons of cost effectiveness and expense and wear and tear. Plan the menus a day at a time? huh? Why not in advance, so you aren't running out to get a forgotten or not-on-hand ingredient? What's wrong with doing the marketing and the errands once a week only?

My own 10 Tips, after forty years of being a homemaker would be along these lines:
    1) Run through the main rooms of the house every evening, and pick up any clutter or dishes that don't belong in the room where they are. (10 minutes TOPS, and I have kids)
    2) Load the dishwasher, or wash up, after supper, and let your family have 15 minutes of time where they are not in your hair, nor you in theirs, while you do this.
    3) Lay out everyone's clothes, briefcase, backpack, and so forth, and even assemble the next day's lunch and snacks, in one spot in the frige.
    4) When you get up, without fail, as soon as you've gone potty, wash your hands, and then wash your face and dab on a tiny bit of lipstick, even if you wear NO other makeup, because it gives you the mental boost you need to be a mom, or a working mom.
    5) Spend 15 minutes a day cleaning a bathroom -- squirt the tub/shower, squirt the toilet, wipe the counters and mirrors, wash the tub and toilet, and sweep or vac, and put the laundry in the hamper.
    6) Plan menus and check your supplies BEFORE you shop, and again BEFORE you cook.
    7) Put the mail and the keys in the same spot, every time, every day. Then you never have to hunt for them.
    8) Check the oil and wiper fluid (or have them checked) every time you go to gas up.
    9) Stick a list on the frige door. When you run out of something, write it down. Then marketing isn't such a hassle.
    10) Spend 15 minutes a day cleaning your soul -- whether that means a walk in the park with your husband, taking the dogs out back and watching them frisk, or sitting on the deck and watching your children play in the back yard.
